Stay away from Rivers schools, Amaechi tells FG




THE Rivers State Government has warned the Federal Government to shelve its plans to renovate some of the state-owned schools.

The Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, had last week promised that the Federal Government would soon begin to give some schools in the state a facelift.

Wike, who made the promise during the foundation laying for the Federal Junior Model Secondary School in Ogu/Bolo, specifically said the Federal Government would build additional classroom blocks at the Birabi Memorial Secondary in Bori, Khana Local Government Area.

No automatic ticket for Buhari, others –APC





The All Progressives Congress has said there will be no automatic ticket for a former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and other presidential aspirants in the party.

This was coming ahead the allegation that some leaders of the party had been planning to give automatic ticket to Buhari, a development that was said not to be favoured by Abubakar Atiku, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Senator Bukola Saraki’s groups within the party.

But the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the APC would not give automatic ticket to Buhari.

Jonathan has failed the North, says ACF




The pan-northern socio-political organisation, Arewa Consultative Forum, rose from an emergency meeting with non-governmental organisations   on Sunday and declared that President Goodluck Jonathan had failed the region in terms of security.


It said there was a deliberate attempt to emasculate the north economically, reduce its numerical strength and divide its people along religious and   political lines.

The ACF, through its     Chairman, Ibrahim Coomassie, stated that the general belief was that the Jonathan administration never liked the North.

He was a patriot, say Fayemi, Adeyeye




The Minister of State for Works, Prince Adedayo Adeyeye, has described the death of civil war hero Brigadier-General Benjamin Adekunle (retd.), as a painful loss to the Yoruba nation in particular and Nigeria.


He said, “We can only pray to God for the repose of the soul of this patriotic Nigerian, who was among those who put their lives on the line to sustain our country.”

Photos: Synagogue building had no govt approval, Gov.Fashola visits site



 Lagos state governor, Babatunde Fashola today visited the website of the collapsed building inside  the Synagogue Church of All Nations in Ikotun. He commiserated with the church founder, Prophet T.B Joshua and also ordered all church workers to avoid work on the site to allow officials of the Nigerian Emergency Management Authority work effectively

Boko Haram attacked our building ─ T.B. Joshua





The founder and General overseer of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, Prophet T. B. Joshua has said Boko Haram may be responsible for the collapse of a six-storey building in the church premises.


Joshua, who told members of his church on Sunday not to be afraid, said the attack was targeted at him and not at them.

The prophet made it clear that the collapse of the six-storey building at around 11.45am on Friday which led to the death of no fewer than 16 persons was a Boko Haram attack.

Four die in Lagos boat accident




No fewer than four persons died in a boat accident in Okera Nla, Ikorodu, Lagos when a boat conveying 22 passengers capsized. Our correspondent learnt that the boat, which took off from Okera Nla, Ikorodu and was heading for Bayeku, capsized at about 7.30pm on Saturday evening. While officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority were able to rescue 17 passengers alive, four had already died, and only their bodies were recovered.

Nollywood actress Nkiru Sylvanus appears to have gotten a new appointment in Imo state government. This is because, Imo Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has disclosed plans to set up a befitting Film Academy in Owerri. The governor appointed actress Nkiru Sylvanus as the Ag. Director General of the Academy to do oversight functions of ensuring judicious use of finance and other logistics.

Kiev, Donetsk Militia Swap 146 Prisoners in East Ukraine





The much-anticipated prisoner swap between Ukrainian security forces and militia in the breakaway republic of Donetsk is underway 30 kilometers to the north of the region’s capital city Donetsk, a RIA Novosti correspondent reports.


The swap follows a groundbreaking ceasefire agreement in Belarus' capital Minsk on September 5 where Ukraine, Russia and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) agreed to exchange all captives held by Kiev and militias in the breakaway eastern regions, in what they described as an “all-for-all” prisoner exchange.

An attempt to cover up the real physical and mental health condition of brain-damaged Governor Danbaba Suntai failed last night in Abuja as Mr. Suntai was ushered before the media at retired General TY Danjuma's Guest house in Abuja shortly after arriving from the UK. Mr. Suntai spoke to the media claiming he had just arrived from Abuja (instead of London).

Air Force jet used in bombing operations against Boko Haram goes missing



A Nigerian air force Alpha Jet found in the fight Boko Haram members went missing. The military plane reportedly disappeared from radar around Adamawa state after it went for a routine operation attack on Boko Haram men on Friday September 12th.

Two fighter pilots have been operating the jet have already been declared missing. The Defence has released a statement on the missing jet. Check it out after  the jump...

Synagogue building collapse: Death toll hits 40- NEMA says




The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says the death toll in the Synagogue Church building collapse in the Ikotun part of Lagos has increased to 40.
 "It's now 40 dead,” NEMA southwest coordinator Ibrahim Farinloye, told AFP by text message. 124 individuals have to date been rescued alive from the rubble of the building considered a guesthouse for foreign followers of the church. The building collapsed as construction work was going on to enhance the 2-storey building to a five storey building.

Self acclaimed Evangelist shoots and kills his own father in Enugu




A self acclaimed evangelist, Chukwukezi Afonogu (pictured above), has been arrested by men of the Enugu state Police command for shooting his 65 year old father, George Afonogu, dead.


In accordance with Sunday Sun, Enugu state Police Commissioner, Mr Mohammed Adamu, said 33 year old Chukwukezi attacked and killed his father on August 25th during arguement. The suspect said he became very angry after his father called him a mad man.

On Friday September 12th, a building inside the Synagogue Church of all Nation suddenly collapsed and according to NEMA officials, 17 people died while 120 people were rescued alive.

In this new report, Ihechukwu Njoku, a freelance journalist (who writes a lot for SCOAN) who visited the scene of the tragic incident writes about what he saw and how many people 'miraculously survived' the building collapse.

Ebola In Liberia, Death Toll Rises to 2400 As No More Bedspace To treat Patients





The head of the World Health Organisation, Margaret Chan has warned that the spiraling tropical Ebola epidemic demands a stronger and faster response from the international community.

“In the three hardest-hit countries, the number is moving faster than the capacity to manage them,” she told reporters in Geneva.

The alarm came as the UN said its peacekeeping force in worst-affected countries of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone would “stay the course” against Ebola.
