Dallas Tops Texas’ List of Counties With Highest Numbers of Women Killings: Reports

Dallas County in the US state of Texas has topped a list of the state's counties showing the numbers of women killed in domestic violence, Dallas News reported.

"It is certainly not anything to be proud of as a community, and it's not a competition that we would want to win," Paige Flink, executive director of The Family Place shelter, told Dallas News Monday.
Dallas stands alongside Harris County, also in Texas, which has long held first place in the number of women who died as a result of domestic abuse, the newspaper said.

An increase in domestic violence last year, according to Dallas News, has propelled Dallas to first place on the list, with 20 women having fallen victim to domestic violence in 2013.
The report was compiled by the Texas Council on Family Violence and the Texas Department of Public Safety, according to which 119 women in Texas were killed in 2013 either by a current or former partner.

In a bid to raise awareness of the issue, the Texas Council on Family Violence has posted a message on its website appealing to Texans to go purple for the month of October. Purple, according to the council, has historically been linked to domestic violence advocacy.

"During DVAM [Domestic Violence Awareness Month] we challenge all of Texas to Go Purple and strive for a state where no woman is killed by a husband, partner, or boyfriend," the message read.
About 75 percent of the 199 women died at home, while another 18 percent in a public place, the newspaper said, adding that 82 percent were killed either by a husband or a boyfriend, with the rest being slain by an ex-partner.
