Poroshenko Underlines Importance of Minsk Memorandum: Reports

In an interview with the country's TV channels, Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko underlined the importance of the Minsk Memorandum, aimed to restore peace in eastern Ukraine, Poroshenko's website reported Sunday.

"We can win only by peace," Poroshenko said.
Poroshenko reminded that the memorandum, achieved in Minsk on September 19, establishes the procedures for ending the armed conflict.

"It brings me confidence that residents of Donetsk and Luhansk regions are tired; they hate armed people and welcome anyone who can bring peace. Ukraine will bring peace to Donbas," he added.
On September 19, a memorandum of nine provisions was drawn up in Minsk by the Contact Group on Ukraine, comprising representatives from Russia, Ukraine, the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's republics and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

The memorandum is expected to regulate the implementation of a ceasefire agreement between Kiev and independence supporters in eastern Ukraine. It also stipulates the establishment of a thirty-kilometer security zone on the current line of contact under the supervision of the OSCE. The sides also agreed to continue exchanging prisoners. The question of Donbas region's status was not, however, discussed during the Minsk meeting.
