Lavrov: Russia Ready to Provide Experts to Assist in Fight Against Ebola Epidemic

– Russia is ready to send its experts to Sierra-Leone to assist in the fight against the Ebola virus epidemic, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters Friday.
"Russia will make an active contribution to the efforts of the world community. We have already sent appropriate aid [and] doctors to Guinea. We are getting ready to do the same for Sierra-Leone," Lavrov noted, speaking on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York.
The worst Ebola outbreak in history started in February in Guinea and quickly spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Senegal and Nigeria. Nigeria has since then contained the virus while leaving the rest of the countries to battle the virus.

According to the latest WHO estimates, the Ebola death toll has risen to just under 3,000 since the epidemic started. Fatality rates are estimated to be at 70.7 percent in Guinea, 72.3 percent in Liberia and 69.0 percent in Sierra Leone.  The UN Security Council called the Ebola outbreak a threat to international peace and security.

There is no officially approved medication for the disease. However, several countries, including Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan, are currently working on vaccines.
The World Health Organization concluded on August 12 that it was ethical to use experimental drugs to treat patients infected with the deadly Ebola virus.
