Mark Hirst – A senior member of the British Government who currently sits in the UK Cabinet, Alistair Carmichael, has told a Scottish newspaper he would resign his position and join Scotland’s negotiating team in the event Scots back 'Yes' in next month’s independence referendum.
Carmichael, who is presently Secretary of State for Scotland, told The Scotsman newspaper, "It would be difficult to see how you could fit into a [UK] cabinet which was at the point on its way to becoming part of a foreign country".

The Liberal Democrat MP and Cabinet Minister had previously argued that "If Scotland becomes a foreign country, we will treat it as a foreign country."
Carmichael told the newspaper that although he would be willing to be part of the negotiating team "if asked to join" he added, "I would have to be realistic about what could be achieved, but you know I am not walking away from Scottish politics.
"If that [Yes vote] is something that happens then yes, I would want to get the best possible deal for Scotland. That's what I do at the moment and that's what I will always do in the future for as long as I hold the job I do," Carmichael said.
A source close to the pro-independence First Minister Alex Salmond responded, "This is very significant because it shows that even members of the UK Cabinet are now openly acknowledging that a Yes vote is becoming ever more likely as the Yes campaign gains ground every day of this campaign."
Scots will go to the polls on September 18 and will answer one question, "Should Scotland become an independent country?"
