400,000 displaced in North-East -NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency has said that about 400,000 persons have been internally displaced in the troubled North-East region of the country from January 2014 till date.

Speaking to journalists in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Wednesday, the information officer of the North-East zonal office of the agency, AbdulKadir Ibrahim, said the number of Internally Displaced Persons from January to July 31 in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states before the explosion of recent attacks in Gwoza and Doron-Baga stood at 360,462.

Ibrahim further revealed that Borno alone had 183,031 IDPs, with Adamawa and Yobe recording 147,198 and 30,233 respectively from January till the end of last month.

The spokesman, who revealed that this had overdrawn the agency which had to be prepared at all times to meet humanitarian crisis in the region, said “because of the magnitude of cases of areas affected by the insurgency and the numbers of IDPs, NEMA has trained volunteers and Emergency Management Vanguard who work with Red Cross to set up camps and to register internally displaced persons.”

He said those who were recently displaced as a result of the capture of Gwoza by Boko Haram are now displaced in Madagali in Adamawa State and Uba in Borno State with others fleeing to neighbouring Cameroon, adding that those displaced by last Sunday’s insurgency attack on Doron-Baga are accommodated at Central Primary School, Baga.

Ibrahim said the agency was tasked with providing relief materials to over 30,000 persons now accommodated in various facilities in Madagali, Uba and Doron-Baga.

He said the agency has concluded plans to ship relief materials into the facilities in three communities.
He said, “We just delivered relief items provided by the Dangote Foundation and the Presidential Committee on Disaster to various facilities at NYSC Borno orientation camp, EYN Church in Maiduguri, Gidan Kaji, Pompomari and Gwange where 200 Nigerian refugees from Central African Republic are accommodated.”

It was gathered that the insurgents on Sunday attacked Doron-Baga where an unspecified number of people were killed and 16 persons who suffered various gunshot injuries were brought to the state’s Specialists Hospital.
