One serviceman died, four were seriously injured in a mortar fire attack on the Novoazovsk border post in the Donetsk region on the Russian-Ukrainian frontier at 2:00 am Kiev Time, according to border guards. Ukrainian military forces have conducted a massive artillery fire overnight Wednesday at the Donetsk regional city Kramatorsk, according to reports by local militiamen.
"A strong gun battle had been waged at the city which was literally showered with shells. Powerful blasts were heard with a frequency like an automatic fire," a representative of the people's militia said, adding that the gunfire had been waged presumably from Grad missile multiple fire launch systems.
Several residential houses caught fire in the shelling in the settlement of Krasnogorka near the city of Kramatorsk. Local residents and public buildings were destroyed, at present, no information about casualties or deaths are available.
"It is extremely dangerous to go out in the street and, moreover, drive in shelled districts," the representative said.
The shelling started on Tuesday evening. The facade wall of the last floor at a nine-story residential house literally collapsed in the blast in Dnepropetrovskaya Street in Stankostroy district in the city of Kramatorsk.
Eyewitnesses add that Kramatorsk residents are fleeing the city. People lined up in queues to get on buses to leave the areas deemed combat zones.
A motorcade with refugees from Kramatorsk came under attack 20 kilometers from the Russian border. No one was injured, but one of the escort vehicles was damaged, the Commissioner for Children’s Rights in the Vladimir region Gennady Prokhrychev told reports on July 2. The incident occurred the day before at about 11 pm Moscow time, Prokhorychev said.
According to him, two buses carried 84 refugees, six of whom were one-year-old children, to the Russian border.
These buses were accompanied by three cars with members of the local self-defense force that fight Ukrainian troops in the southeastern part of the country. The buses were only 300-400 meters when one of the escort vehicles was attacked by fire 20 kilometers from the border. So as not to risk the lives of women and children, the motorcade was forced to turn around.
Refugees spent the night at Krasnodon’s bus station. Later the motorcade made it to the border checkpoint “Donetsk-Severniy”. One of the buses crossed the border while some kind of issues rose with the second one, so people just carried the children across. When all of the refugees arrive in Rostov-on-Don, they will be transferred to Russian buses and taken to Vladimir region, the commissioner said.
According to the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry, the number of refugees from Ukraine is increasing. "Two additional shelters opened in the past 24 hours to accommodate 357 persons. In total, 252 shelters accommodating 17,828 persons operate on the territory of the Russian Federation," the ministry’s spokesman Alexander Drobyshevsky said.
Amid the attack a Ukrainian twin-engine attack plane with a shoulder-launched anti-aircraft missile was hit over the Donetsk region, however not only did the pilot succeeded in destroying the offending missile launcher, but also managed to land the plane with only one engine still running, Interfax reports a press officer for the antiterrorist operation in the eastern part of Ukraine Aleksey Dmytrashkovsky saying.
"A Su-24 plane came under fire while flying over the Donetsk region. A total of four MANPADS missiles were launched. One missile hit the plane, and an engine caught fire. The pilot managed to stop the engines and extinguish the fire. He also managed to destroy the anti-aircraft launcher that had hit it," Dmytrashkovsky said.
After being hit, the plane flew for 300 kilometers with only one engine still functioning and made a landing at its base aerodrome. While making the touchdown, it caught fire again, but firefighters at hand quickly extinguished the blaze.
"The crew is safe and sound, and the plane requires repairs," Dmytrashkovsky said.
Meanwhile, Donetsk's Prime Minister Alexander Borodai is ready to continue consultations with Kiev’s authorities on ceasefire.
"We keep in mind the opinion of the Russian Foreign Ministry and the OSCE. Considering this opinion, the DPR government declares its readiness to carry on the ceasefire negotiations on condition the other side is ready," he said on Tuesday evening.
"The date has not been set and the meeting venue is a stumbling stone. It seems the consultations group fears to travel to Donetsk in the absence of the ceasefire. But I can assure you we will provide security for the contact group," the DPR premier noted.
Donetsk's Prime Minister insists on holding the next round of peace consultations in Donbas.
"A variety of venues have been proposed. We may consider some of these venues but we would like to hold the next round on the DPR territory," he said.
