The Governor of Lagos state, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) has reiterated the need for state police in Nigeria.
He said this at the occasion of 11th Executive/legislative parley organized by ministry of political and legislative powers Bureau, held between 8th - 10th may, 2014, at Golden Tulip Hotel, Festac, Lagos.
Fashola urged the representatives of the state at the National Assembly to take urgent step, in order to bring collaborative capacity to policing and law enforcement.
According to him “To the best of my knowledge, if I can paraphrase my memory of the constitution, this law has not forbidden the existence of multi-level policing, I believe that the very ,very serious legislators, who are imaginative can create a law that leads within the confine of that constitution and allow multi level policing”.
He further said that no nation that has the security challenge like ours, will refuse the emergence of state police. He therefore implored the members of the executive and the legislative to work together, so as to make progress in governance.
While speaking, the special adviser to the Governor on political and legislative powers, Hon. Folami Muslim Oloruntele disclosed that the advantage of the parley cannot be over emphasized. He said the Executive/legislative parley creates a unique opportunity for the various political office holders in the state, to come together to interact, brain storm and share views on ways to move the state forward.
Folami said apart from strengthening the relationship between the two arms of government, the parley also affords members of the executive council, a strategic opportunity to rub minds with the legislators at the State and National level, as well as the party chieftains in the state.
Other dignitaries at the occasion were the representatives of Governor Emeritus, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ably represented by the deputy chairman of All Progressive Congress (APC) in the state, Cardinal James Omolaja Odunbaku, former Senator, Olorunnibe Mamowora, Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon and a host of others.
