An angry mob in Calabar on Tuesday hacked three suspected criminals with machetes almost to the point of death. The criminals reportedly specialises in snatching women's bag. On that fateful day, the criminals had snatched a bag containing an unspecified sum of money from one woman who stepped out of First Bank premises along Calabar Road and sped off. Unknown to them, they were trailed by an unidentified lady who drove behind them in company of others.

They intercepted the robbers car at Goldie/Atu junction where an angry mob later took over.
They broke the robbers' car glasses, dragged them out of the car and set the car ablaze. They also used machetes to inflict cuts on the robbers before the police from the Atakpa Police Division who rescued them arrived the scene and took them to the station.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Hogan Bassey, said, "The boys are with us and are being given medical attention. They will appear in court after investigations are completed."
Meanwhile, two robbers operating in a commercial tricycle around the Anantigha area of Calabar were killed on Monday, while their tricycle was set ablaze. Another suspected criminal was almost lynched along Uwanse Street, but was rescued by the police who whisked him away.
According to the residents, before now they used to apprehend criminals and hand them over to the police, only for them to be released later so they decided to tackle criminals themselves as the police was ineffective.
