Lagos PPA seeks collaboration with Bangor University

Lagos State Public Procurement Agency is set to collaborate with the Bangor University (formerly University of Northern Wales), United Kingdom, in the training of its procurement officers as part of efforts aimed at actualizing the implementation of the Lagos State Public Procurement Law 2011.

The General Manager/Chief Executive Officer of the Agency, Engr. Akin Onimole, stated this on Wednesday during the courtesy visit to the Agency by the Bangor University team led Professor Dermot Cahill, the Dean, School of Law and Director of the Institute of Competition and Procurement Studies.

He stated that the Institution is the first University to initiate the idea of collaboration with the Agency in the area of capacity building and certification which is essential to the procurement cadre in the Civil Service.

Engr. Onimole noted that the collaboration will further strengthen the efforts of the government towards capacity building for the Procurement officers which the Agency had commenced since 2012 when it was established, adding that about 250 officers had been converted into the procurement cadre in the State Civil service.

Also speaking at the event, the Director General of Public Service Staff Development Centre (PSSDC), Magodo, Mrs. Olubunmi Fabanwo commended the collaboration initiative, stressing that necessary knowledge and skills would be acquired by Procurement officers which will further assist them in the discharge of their official duties and responsibilities to the state.

Responding on behalf of his team, Professor Dermot Cahill, stated that the purpose of the visit is to offer long and short term assistance as well as special training for procurement officers in the State Public service, adding that the university is ready to train leaders in Procurement to further assist Government in identifying procurement problems, achieve implementable reports, offer training on procurement jurisprudence and equally support the staff with needed materials in procurement.

He explained that other areas of collaboration will include, formulation and analysis of policies and guidelines relating to public Procurement, Development of Procurement law, strategy, knowledge and elucidation of the provisions of PPA 2012 through dedicated procurement training to staff of the Agency and related public sector personnel.

The team also visited the Public Service Staff Development Centre (PSSDC), Magodo and commended the efforts of the State Government in having such an infrastructure facilities at the centre to train its public servants.
