Lagos Counsels against Chieftancy Disputes

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) has warned against incessant boundary, chieftaincy disputes, illegal sand dredging, aiding and abetting of smugglers, illegal immigrants and land grabbing among others in the state.

He stated this at the occasion of the 5th coronation anniversary celebration of HRM Oba Adekanmi Oyekan Ilufemiloye Ajose Possi (the 3rd) Alapa of Egun Awori Apa Kingdom in Badagry West LCDA.

Fashola who was represented by the Commissioner for Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Ademorin Kuye added that such acts constitute major setbacks to the state’s aim of becoming one of the foremost economies in the next half a decade.

The Governor noted that Badagry division in which Apa is located is an international border region which enjoys a pride of place in Nigerian history especially as regards early European contacts with West Africa.

He remarked that government alone cannot overcome its challenges without the cooperation of the people. He further urged all the traditional rulers in the state to imbibe the spirit of selflessness towards assisting the government in attaining its avowed goals in the positive transformation of Lagos as an emerging megacity.

He declared that the State government is set to make Badagry the next tourist destination of Africa with the completion of the 10-lane Lagos Badagry Expressway. He also urged the people to register with LASSRA in order not to be counted as foreigners.

The weeklong anniversary programme included Jumat prayer, league football matches by youths of Apa kingdom, visit to communities, interdenominational service, award of honourary chieftaincy titles on deserving individuals, cultural displays, talent hunt for up-coming musicians, commissioning of Doctor’s quarters for the health centre among others.
