Cyprus OKs Russian aircrafts to use airbase near Pathos – media

Cyprus authorities have permitted Russian military aircrafts to use the Andreas Papandreou airbase, situated near Pathos, the Cyprus Weekly newspaper reports. An agreement on cooperation in this field is yet to be signed.

On Thursday, Defense Minister Photis Photiu, with the consent of the Foreign Minister, set forward a proposal to assist Russia in this field for the Cabinet’s consideration. The latter gave its consent for Russian aircrafts of various types to land at the Cyprian air base but only in emergency situations and for humanitarian reasons. At the same time, the Russian air force won’t be allowed to use warehouses of the Andreas Papandreou airbase.
In May 2013, Defense Minister Photiu and his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu discussed the possibility of Cyprus permitting Russian aircrafts to use its airbase and Russian warships to enter the port of Limassol. Besides, the same issue was raised during a meeting between Cypriot Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides with his Russian opposite number Sergei Lavrov in St Petersburg in June last year.
