Almost 60 children end up in hospital over wrong vaccination - India

Close to 60 children were rushed off to a hospital located in eastern India after they were accidentally told to swallow a hepatitis B vaccine instead of the necessary polio drops, according to officials. Sweating and vomiting were some of the side effects children experienced after being given an oral hepatitis vaccine, which is usually injected. The incident occurred in a village in West Bengal on Sunday, as stated by health authorities.

Continue after the break.
Some 120 children in total swallowed the medication at the clinics, set up to administer polio vaccine drops as part of a campaign to eradicate the disease, before health workers discovered the mistake, said Biswaranjan Sathpaty, director of West Bengal Health Services. “A total of 57 children started vomiting immediately after they were administered the wrong vaccine,” Sathpaty said.
A hospital in Arambagh took the children in for treatment and afterward, they were discharged. Even though medical professionals assured that no long term consequences would come with the mix up, this may make parents more hesitant in future vaccinations for their kids.
