NSA’s activity in Latin America is 'collection of data on oil & military purchases from Venezuela, energy and narcotics from Mexico' - Greenwald

Glenn Greenwald, the American investigative journalist who received 20,000 secret US government files from Snowden, believes that the main NSA’s activity in Latin America is the "collection of data on oil and military purchases from Venezuela, energy and narcotics from Mexico, and mapping the movement of Revolutionary Forces of Colombia (FARC).”

Testifying before the Brazilian Senate committee over details about the National Security Agency’s clandestine surveillance in South America, Greenwald said that "the pretext for the spying is only one thing: terrorism and the need to protect the (American) people. But the reality is that there are many documents which have nothing to do with terrorism or national security, but have to do with competition with other countries, in the business, industrial and economic fields."

"There will certainly be more revelations on the espionage activities of the US government and allied governments...on how they have penetrated the communications systems of Brazil and Latin America," he said.
Greenwald also added that he could not give more details on the documents as the investigation of Snowden is under way in the United States.

Referring to the secret surveillance system allegedly used by the NSA to monitor Internet traffic, he said that the USA was collecting not just metadata, "but the content of emails and what is being discussed in telephone conversations. It is a powerful program which frightens."
Last month, speaking with the AFP news agency, Greenwald said that Snowden personally handed him the documents in Hong Kong, where he temporarily took refuge, after fleeing the United States.

And now, according to Greenwald, the US political officials and various members of the US media have launched demonization campaign, making Edward Snowden the US enemy number one.
Actually, it was wise of Edward Snowden to get in touch with the journalist and hand him over almost 20,000 secret US government files. Brazil-based investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald is known for his massive critics of the US foreign and domestic policies.

Glenn Greenwald, 44, wrote several books on America's three overreactions to 9/11 attacks: the war in Iraq, the war in Afghanistan, and the war against personal liberty in the United States.
He claims that the Obama, compared to his predecessor Bush, is a complete "disaster", as he practices the right to assassinate US citizens who haven't been charged with a crime, and backs up his policy with spreading "liberal" values.

Greenwald is a fan of Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, and Bradley Manning, the 25-year-old army intelligence analyst who is sentenced to 90 years in prison for releasing hundreds of thousands of classified documents to Wikileaks.

In addition, Greeneald is gay who was forced to move to Brazil to live with his husband David Michael Miranda when the US had the Defense of Marriage Act, under which the same-s-ex couples were not allowed in the US with the residency visas.
The fight for his rights taught Greenwald to be on the other side of the barrier and have a critic eye on the US policies, as being out of the community forces people to challenge the system. In this manner he explains Manning’s motives to disclose secret documents to Wikileaks. "Gay people, because they're already "outside the sphere of comfort," have a "huge advantage in being willing to challenge authority," Greenwald explains
