62 Fake NYSC Members Arrested In Nasarawa Convicted

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have uncovered a fake National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp at Tammah village, Nassarawa Local Government Area of Nassarawa State, with 62 ‘corps members.’The fake corps members made up of 44 females and 18 males, were arrested on a routine surveillance of the command.
In a statement signed by its spokesman Mr Okeh Emmanuel, the NSCDC said the “fake corpers were arrested while undergoing training with standard facilities such as an obstacle crossing, man-o-war drill and an open field for marching exercises”.

It was revealed that the fake corps members paid sums ranging from N120, 000 to N200, 000 before being admitted to the camp. Some of the suspects in their confessions claimed to be students of evening classes at the University of Jos, Plateau State and feigned ignorance of the fact that it was a fake camp, saying they were lured into it out of desperation as without an NYSC discharge certificate, one would not be able to secure a job in future.
However, the suspects were charged to the Upper Area Court Keffi, where after pleading guilty to a three count charge, were convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment with option of N30,000 fine each.
It would be recalled that in 2010, 87 fake corps members were arrested from an illegal camp in Angwa Lebu of Keffi LG of Nasarawa state and in 2012, 79 fake corps members were arrested from a hotel in the same state.
