Four died in Rivers crash – NEMA

A child and a grandmother were among the four persons that lost their lives when a car plunged into the river along Choba Road in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Though, it was speculated that only one person died in the incident, which occurred on Sunday, the National Emergency Management Agency confirmed on Monday that four among five occupants, including an infant, were among those who died in the crash.
It was learnt that the Toyota Camry car with five occupants was on a high speed and attempted to overtake a bus.

The Zonal Coordinator (South-South) of NEMA, Mr. Emenike Umesi, told The PUNCH in a telephone interview that the deceased were removed from the river at about 5pm on Monday.
Umesi added that the vehicle that plunged into the river was also removed through the efforts of officials of NEMA, Federal Road Safety Commission and some motorists within area.
He pointed out that all hands had been on deck since Sunday to remove the deceased and pull out the vehicle, adding that the endeavour eventually paid off on Monday.
He said “It was an accident and a Toyota Camry car plunged into the Choba River on Sunday. Our men and other outfits like the FRSC have been around to ensure that the deceased and vehicles were removed from the river.”
