Police Ask Army to Handover Murder Suspect

Abia State Police Command has written to Army authorities to release a soldier who allegedly shot and killed a young man, Chijioke Ndubuaku, at a wedding ceremony in Umuahia last weekend.
Ndubuaku, a fresh graduate, was said to have been shot dead by one of the soldiers manning a security check-point at Isieke on Umuahia- Ikot Ekpene road, in Umuahia North Local Government Area of the state. The slain young man was said to be a cousin of the bride.
Abia State Police Commissioner, Mr. Ambrose Aisabor, who confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with Vanguard, said the police had officially written to the army authorities for the release of the suspected soldier.
He said the army had promised to deal with the matter departmentally before handing over the matter to the police.
The police commissioner also confirmed that the matter had been officially reported to the command by the family of the slain young man.
“A member of the family has reported the matter. What happened was that, I was monitoring the incident. From my walkie talkie, I learnt that somebody was shot by a soldier. I sent my patrol team, when they got there the soldiers ran away.
“I understand it was wedding ceremony. There was a quarrel and somebody invited the soldiers and when they got there, they shot indiscriminately and a bullet hit the deceased on the chest.
“He was taken to the Federal Medical Centre [Umuahia], where he was confirmed dead. We incidented the matter.
“We have officially written to the army authorities to handover the soldier to us for prosecution. The army authorities said they want to first deal with it departmentally before they hand it over to the police,” Aisabor explained.
