Police authorities are investigating the murder of Orioye Oyetakin, the 23-year-old first child of a traditional ruler elect (Olikan) in the Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State. The late prince was killed on December 27 last year. His murder is the second to have occurred in the community. The Regent of the Town, Shem Omoreigha, was also murdered eight months ago by yet to be apprehended criminals.
Family sources told PREMIUM TIMES on Thursday that they celebrated the first day of the New Year in sorrow because apart from murder of Mr. Oyetakin, other members of the community including a cleric, Nelson Okunomo, and another man named, Adewole Ikudehinbu, were seriously injured.
The father of the deceased, Adeleke Oyetakin, while recounting the incident during an interview with our correspondent, explained that crisis started in the community after the selection process which led to his emergence. He said the kingmakers concluded the selection process in October last year when he defeated his main contestant, Busayo Oroyo.
He alleged that some people who were dissatisfied with the electoral process are behind the crisis that engulfed the town. He said, “the latest incident which led to the death of my son, started around 6pm on the fateful day at Ode-Itikan when the young man travelled home for the preparation of our family’s annual social gathering slated for December 30.”
“The hoodlums invaded the community and started shooting sporadically until they got their target that they shot dead,” Mr. Oyetakin said. He said the remains of his deceased son had been deposited at the Igbokoda General Hospital’s morgue while the matter was promptly reported to the police.
Mr. Oyetakin noted that some soldiers went to the town the following day of the incident to arrest the situation and in the process, took away along with the, some items which could be useful in the course of the investigation. Police spokesperson, Aremu Adeniran, confirmed the development when our correspondent called him on phone on Thursday.
He said, “the incident actually occurred and the matter had been transferred to the state CID for a proper investigation.”
