The political tension in Imo State has risen up a notch as aides to the governor, Rochas Okorocha, on Wednesday night clashed with that of Senator Chris Anyanwu (APGA, Imo). The senator, a former ally of the governor, narrated the incident while speaking to reporters saying the governor’s convoy swerved into her convoy at Azara Egbelu, along Owerri/Umuahia road on her way to her village.
She continued saying the governors security went on to attack and brutalize her drivers in an incident which, according to her, happened between 6-7pm. She said it was the cries and commotion that ensued which prompted her to approach the governors security details appealing to them not to kill the drivers.
In his reaction, the governor said the senator’s convoy endangered his life. In a statement released by Ebere Uzoukwa, media aide to Okorocha, the governor narrowly escaped death when the senator’s convoy rammed into it. Uzoukwa said the governor was returning from Ihitte-Uboma after an official assignment when the incident took place at Azaraegbelu along Owerri/Umuahia express way.
According to him, Anyanwu’s convoy overtook the governor’s convoy in a dangerous manner and cut-off the lead security vehicle which immediately aroused suspicion. He explained that this was what prompted the governor’s security details to shield the governor from possible attack before the vehicles were dispatched from the convoy.
He reportedly went on to accuse the senator of slapping the governor’s Aide-de-camp and chief detail and even ordered her naval security person to open fire.
