Twenty-one leaders of former agitators in the Niger-Delta region on Tuesday returned from South Africa after completing a non-violence and leadership and business development training. The leaders returned aboard a South African Airways flight, along with the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Chairman, Presidential Amnesty Programme, Mr Kingsley Kuku.
Mr Reuben Wilson from Bayelsa, who spoke to journalists on behalf of the team at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, said the training had expanded the horizon of participants. ``We have now learnt how to resolve conflicts using non-violence principles and that is what we are going to be practising.
``We have given our commitment to the government to maintain peace in the Niger-Delta region and we are not going back on it,’’ he said.
According to him, they are now back home as ambassadors of peace and will take what they have been taught in South Africa to their respective states.He said that they also had the opportunity to see other Niger Delta youths excelling as pilots and instructors at the African Union Aviation Academy in Mafikeng, South Africa.
``Some of our brothers, including my younger brother, are now commercial pilots and instructors; we never thought this could happen," he said. Wilson commended Kuku’s leadership and focused management of the Amnesty programme, which he said, had been a huge success.
