There was drama in Ikare, Akoko North-East of Ondo State on Friday when an Abuja-bound trailer was impounded by a team of soldiers deployed in the community for today’s governorship election in the state.
The trailer, marked LAGOS XD 880 LSD, coming from Akure, was said to have been stopped for violating traffic rule by driving against oncoming vehicles close to a barricade mounted by the soldiers.
Trouble started when heavily armed soldiers ordered the driver and 19 other passengers on board to disembark from the trailer at Oke-Igbede area of the town to frog jump at the roadside.
The soldiers threatened to beat up any of the passengers who failed to obey their orders.
Meanwhile, a crowd of residents of the town gathered at a distance to witness the encounter between the northerners and the soldiers.
However, the soldiers were said to have later released the men after serving some punishment with a strong warning that the driver should desist from reckless driving.
A motorcyclist, who gave his name simply as Ade, said the soldiers were controlling traffic on the highway when the truck driver drove recklessly to escape the traffic gridlock.
He said, “We were afraid that the soldiers could be very violent, but they later released the men after sounding strong warnings to them.”
