Mr Ezenwa Nwanga, the Chairman, Partners for Electoral Reforms, has called on INEC to address some of the country’s perennial election problems such as late arrival of voting materials.
Nwanga also suggested in Akure that some electoral units be split into two or three to allow the presiding officers cope with the large number of voters on the queue.
He spoke at a meeting between INEC officials and domestic observers under the aegis of the Nigeria Civil Society Election Situation Rooms.
Nwanga further observed that security men were provided on the roads while the hinterland lacked adequate security during the election.
He recommended the application of “ sanctions and reward ’’ for INEC staff to ensure required professsional results.
Also speaking, Dr Ade Adedoyin of the Global Helps Foundation said Mayegun Unit 1 at Bye pass in Akure South had only one NYSC member at the polling Centre.
Mrs Yemisi Ransome-Kuti of NEPAD Nigeria, in her contribution, said that there was the need for INEC to train its staff for better performance.
She also recommended that security personnel should be trained too on electoral duties.
Responding, the Head of the Department of Election Monitoring and Observation, Mrs Halliday Ikwunma, said every observation presented to the commission would be looked into.
“ I am assuring you that your observations and suggestions for improved conduct of election by INEC would get to the chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, on Monday,’’ Ikwunma said.
She expressed gratitude to every observer for participating in the Ondo governorship election.
