Two Killed, One Injured In Abuja Building Collapse



No fewer than two persons were feared dead in a building collapse on Tuesday, in Abuja while another person was critically injured and receiving treatment in the hospital. Confirming the incident, Information Officer of National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Mr. Sani Datti, said, three people were casting concrete at an uncompleted building behind Dunes Plaza in Maitaima, Abuja, when suddenly the concrete collapsed and trapped them.

After the relevant emergency agencies rescued the trapped workers, two people were feared dead and one person was critically injured and was rushed to the hospital.  The two people that died were identified as Hamza and Friday, while Ganiyu Akande who was critically injured had been taken to the hospital.

FG to complete 11 power plants by 2014



The Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, has said all the 11 power plants being constructed by the Federal Government will be completed before the end of the first quarter of 2014.
Maku stated this on Monday while fielding questions from journalists after the Peoples Democratic Party stakeholders’ meeting in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
He said seven out of the power plants had so far been completed, while efforts were being intensified to complete others before the end of the first quarter of 2014.

Suntai writes assembly, seeks to resume duty



RECUPERATING Governor Danbaba Suntai may have sent a letter to the Taraba State House of Assembly  seeking to resume  work.
The letter, according to a United States- based Nigerian online news portal,SaharaReporters, was  on Monday  received by the Speaker of the House of Assembly,Haruna Tsokwa.

 The portal did not say exactly when the letter was written and the day the governor, who arrived in the country from the US after a 10-month medical sojourn, hoped to commence duties.

Police bullet kills 60-year-old deejay, wife demands justice



Wife of a 60-year-old deejay, Adamson Bello, who was killed last Sunday by a stray bullet fired by a policeman attached to the Okokomaiko Police Division, Lagos State, has called for justice.
Modinatu, 50,  said the police did not only shoot her husband, they also frustrated efforts to get him medical treatment because the family could not obtain a police report demanded by the hospital.
Modinatu, who was married to the late deejay for 30 years before the relationship was terminated by the police bullet, explained to PUNCH Metro that Adamson was hit in the chest a few metres from their house.
Our correspondent learnt that the shot was fired by one of the policemen guarding a new hotel in the area, South Bound Hotel.

(AP)Relatives of an Ohio couple who died at a nursing home 11 hours apart on the same day said their love story’s ending reflects their devotion over 65 years of marriage.

Harold and Ruth Knapke died in their shared room on Aug. 11, days before their 66th anniversary, The Dayton Daily News  reported.

The spiritualist, Nakasi Ahmadu “used the cloned phone number to give instruction to the Chief of Staff to the minister via text message to deposit N3m into his (Takat) account number 0011141544 with Diamond Bank Plc. The amount was withdrawn the same day by the suspect.”

Barbaric: Land grabbers beat architect to death over ₦5,000



When Eniola Kiyesola left home for work on August 18, 2013, he bade his wife and three children farewell, saying he would return after the day’s work.
This was, however, not to be as the 36-year-old man was beaten to death by land grabbers few hours after he left his house.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Kiyesola had gone to a construction site to supervise an ongoing work when about five land grabbers stormed the site.

Snipers in Syria shoot at UN chemical inspectors



Unidentified snipers shot at UN fact finding envoy Monday forcing the inspection team to suspend their attempt to investigate claims that chemical weapons had been used near Damascus, a UN spokesman said. A replacement vehicle has been sought after the vehicle carrying the envoy was damaged. The UN team was to inspect a site where poison gas killed many hundreds of people in Damascus suburbs.
"The first vehicle of the chemical weapons investigation team was deliberately shot at multiple times by unidentified snipers," said UN spokesman Martin Nesirky. No injuries were reported.
The alleged shooting came after two mortar bombs landed close to the hotel where the inspectors are staying.

Israeli security forces shot dead three Palestinians, Peace Talk Canceled.





Peace talks between Israeli and Palestinian negotiators expected on Monday have been shelved after Israeli security forces shot dead three Palestinians during clashes in the West Bank, a Palestinian official said.  "The meeting that was to take place in Jericho...today was cancelled because of the Israeli crime committed in Qalandiya today," said the official, referring to the refugee camp where the clashes erupted before dawn.

Updates On Governor Suntai's Health As He Returns



The allegedly brain-damaged governor of Taraba State, Danbaba Suntai, left New York on Saturday on his way back to Nigeria en rout Abuja. He travelled on a private jet with his younger brother, a Nigeria senator, and some officials of the Nigerian High Commission in New York and two medics.

Reliable sources said he traveled aboard a jet equipped to handle medical emergencies. The jet will refuel in Dakar, Senegal, before flying to Abuja to arrive at about 9:00am on Sunday morning.

16-year-old who killed boy, 8, gets life in prison without parole

A 16-year-old, who went out looking to kill and murdered a random 8-year-old, will be jailed forever.
Trevor Reese of St. Francisville, Louisiana, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Reese had initially pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but later changed his plea to guilty. He was found guilty of second-degree murder for the killing of 8-year-old Jackson “Jack” Attuso.

Mexico migrant train derails, 4 dead, 35 injured



A cargo train carrying up to 300 migrants derailed in southeastern Mexico on Sunday, leaving at least four people dead and 35 injured, officials said. Luis Felipe Puente, the national civil protection coordinator, confirmed the toll on Twitter, adding that 16 of the injured were in "serious" condition following the incident in the state of Tabasco. The train, known as "The Beast," carries Mexican and Central American migrants with many sitting on top of the cars after paying smugglers upwards of $100 for the right to travel. The train derailed on a stretch of tracks alongside a river and the site of the accident is only accessible by boat, a public security official from the municipality of Huimanguillo said.
The Tabasco state civil protection agency said the train derailed at around 3:00 am (08:00 GMT) and that rescuers were using hydraulic tools to cut through the metal to find survivors.

Taiwan seizes over 2,500 unusual turtles heading to China



Taiwan coastguards seized more than 2,500 protected turtles bound for dinner plates in China, officials said Sunday, calling it the biggest smuggling case of its kind they had ever seen.

Coastguards discovered the 2,626 rare turtles - 1,180 Asian yellow pond turtles and 1,446 yellow-lined box turtles - in a container on board a vessel in Kaohsiung, a port in the south of Taiwan, on Saturday.

North Florida U.S.A : Man kills Ex-box and former Co-worker before killing self.



A one-time employee of a north Florida trucking company shot and killed his ex-boss and a former co-worker on Saturday, then wounded two others before killing himself, authorities said.

Hubert Allen Jr, 72, killed former co-worker Rolando Gonzalez-Delgado, 28, near a highway in a rural area between the towns of Lake Butler and Worthington on Saturday morning, the Union County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Syrian rebels manufactured chemical weapons outside Damascus




The Syrian military have discovered a warehouse with chemical agents in a suburb of Damascus. Correspondent of the Al-Ihbariya Syrian information channel Yara Salehwho was among the journalists who inspected the site of the scary find has given an exclusive interview to The Voice of Russia. She says that the discovered warehouse was at the same time a laboratory where shells were stuffed with poisonous chemicals.

The Syrian military found chemical weapons in the rebels’ tunnel located in the Jobar suburb of Damascus. Later the Syrian state TV showed the discovered poisonous agents and medical drugs.

Jungle Justice : Armed Robber Burnt Alive In Onitsha Anambra State



Close to the location of a baby found dumped in Onitsha on Friday was the badly burnt body of a young man in his late 20s who had boarded a luxury bus going to Lagos with a view to robbing other passengers on the way but luck ran against him as he was searched and a locally made pistol found on him.

The incident according eyewitness accounts occurred at 9pm on Thursday when the suspect dressed in a black suit boarded the luxury bus with other passengers. But when the driver wanted to move, he asked that a search on passengers be conducted and it was during the search that a locally made pistol fell off from the suspect’s pocket. As a result, he was lynched and burnt by irate youths.

44 People Dead In Borno Village



At least 44 people were slaughtered at Dumba village on the outskirts of Baga town, in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, by gunmen on Tuesday night in what is believed to be a continuation of reprisal attacks since the death of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau became public.According to sources, about 50 gunmen stormed Dumba village which is some kilometers away from Baga and slaughtered 44 people. Many people were also said to have been injured during the attack that lasted for hours.

Strike grounds federal hospitals, JOHESU says Health Minister insincere



The nationwide strike called by the health workers’ union has taken a toll on federal health institutions across Nigeria and patients have been at the receiving end.

TRAGEDY: A Lively wedding turns into funeral.



A wedding in Iraq turned into the stuff of nightmares after one of the guests who was at the party accidentally shot and killed his friend.

The victim was enjoying himself on the dance floor, when a man dancing opposite pulled out a handgun.

He had intended to let the firearm off in the air - a sign of celebration in Iraq - but appeared to pull the trigger too early and shot his friend in the face.

English Woman , dislocated Jaw While ingesting triple-patty burger



Talk about biting off more than you can chew.  Nicola Peate, 25, suffered a dislocated jaw while attempting to eat a triple-patty burger at a Liverpool, U.K., restaurant. According to the Guardian, she tried to laugh it off at first, but sought medical attention after the pain persisted.

“I tried to eat it with a knife and fork and couldn’t. I couldn’t open my mouth fully,” Peate said in a U.K. Press Association release. “It felt like I had cramp in my tongue, then I started to get an ear ache and a headache. The next morning I woke up and felt really, really ill. The whole side of my head was hurting.”

Boko Haram: Amnesty panel shows ‘peace talks video’ •They met with us in prison - Northern CAN

Medical Director Commits Suicide In Lagos



The Medical Director of City Convalescent Clinic, Mr. Okereke has committed suicide in his home in Ketu. The body of the deceased was found by his wife dangling from the ceiling fan in one of the rooms of their two-storey building, which also houses a clinic. The reason why he took his life could not be ascertained as he did not leave any suicide note behind.

A neighbor of the deceased said they woke up this morning and heard people wailing from the clinic and when they got there the wife of the deceased, who wept uncontrollably, narrated how she discovered the lifeless body of her late husband hanging from the ceiling this morning.

Lawyer rejects govt report on underage prisoners



A lawyer, Mr. Ahmed Adetola-Kazeem, has rejected the report of the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, on the alleged imprisonment of some under-18 children by the state’s Special Court.

Adetola-Kazeem, through his group, Prisoners’ Rights Initiative, had petitioned Ipaye alleging that there were underage children among those who were sentenced for minor environmental offences by the Special Court in Alausa, Ikeja on May 2, 2013.

In the cell block reserved for nursing mothers and pregnant inmates at the Kirikiri Female Prison, Lagos, toddlers clung to their mothers’ chests. They observed our correspondent, when he visited last week Saturday, with a bemused expression on their young faces.

They are in prison because their mothers are inmates. Apparently, they weren’t aware of a better life out there. They probably thought it was normal to be confined only to the four walls of the prison. No friends, no birthday parties, no relationship at all with other children outside the prison walls. They are victims of circumstances and will remain so until they are 18 months old.
