France Bans Twitter Term ‘Hashtag’



The French government has included the Twitter term ‘hashtag’ in a list of words to be avoided in order to protect the national language.
The Académie Française is responsible for maintaining standards of French and has identified the English social networking term as a word that undermines linguistic purity, The Mirror reports.

Lifeless Body Of Man Found Hanging From Mango Tree



Mando Afaka area of  Kaduna State was Monday morning thrown into a gloomy state when the lifeless body of a middle-aged man was found dangling from a mango tree. The victim whose name could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report, is suspected to have hanged himself. However, men of the Kaduna state police command have retreived the body and taken it to a hospital for further examination. The victim’s mobile phone was also retrieved from his pocket while efforts were made to establish contact with his relations. More details later.


Masquerade Arrested By Police In Abeokuta For Murder



The ancient city of Abeokuta was thrown into pandemonium on Monday after a masquerade allegedly shot dead an Islamic cleric identified as Lateef Sabiu during Egungun festival.
The attack on the Islamic cleric led to a reprisal attack as Islamic youths allegedly razed down a building belonging to traditional worshippers in protest against the murder of one of their members.
The 22-year Islamic Cleric was allegedly shot dead Sunday evening while he was on a motorcycle during a ‘stop and search’ in Ijaye area of the city.

Assassins Attach Rapper Rick Ross



Early Monday morning, Rick Ross' silver 2011 Rolls-Royce was the apparent target of a drive-by shooting in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, according to multiple reports.
Shots were fired at the artist's Rolls-Royce, causing the driver of the Ross' vehicle to make a turn and crash into an apartment complex, the Sun-Sentinel reported. "An unknown vehicle shot a couple of rounds," a police spokesman told the newspaper. "The [Rolls Royce] was not struck."

NBC Denies Banning Music Videos After P'Square Lashes Out



The Nigerian Broadcast Commission, NBC, and National Films and Video Censors Board, NFVCB, on Monday denied banning the broadcast of some musical videos by Nigerian artistes.
Mrs Maimuna Jimada, the Acting Public Relations Officer of the Commission, disclosed in Abuja that the commission was not aware of the ban.
According to her, NBC was not in charge of banning musical videos. “NBC has not banned any videos as we are not in-charge of placing a ban on music videos.”

Anambra’s Floating Bodies



MORE than a week after bodies were found floating on a river in Amansea, Anambra State, the security agencies appear helpless about identifying the bodies or making any headway about the cause of their death.  Governor Peter Obi’s promise of N5 million to anyone with information that could help unravel the “mystery” has yielded no results.
A few more weeks and the event would be off the news radar until a deadlier incident, when this one would be used as a reference. It is a shame that such low levels of performances are associated with the security agencies and the public accepts them.

Coscharis Boss Cosmas Maduka retires from Access Bank’s board

LAGOS — The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has sanctioned Access Bank Plc for violating the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act, BOFIA, 1991 in 2011.  
This came as Dr Maduka Cosmas has retired from Access Bank’s Board of Directors.
The apex bank, in the sanction, fined Access Bank N3 million for violating its rules and regulations on granting of loans.
However, CBN told Vanguard, yesterday, that the issue at stake is not new. The CBN official said the said sanction was based on the examination the CBN carried out on the bank on September 30, 2011.

Concede presidency to S-East – Ohanaeze



LAGOS—Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo weekend, said the turn of the Igbo to occupy the Presidency had come, warning that any attempt to rip the South East of its due after President Jonathan’s tenure would be resisted.
This came on a day former governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, insisted that it was the turn of Ndigbo to produce the president of Nigeria in 2015, urging the people to work hard to actualize it.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos, new National Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Prince Osita Oganah, stated emphatically that Igbo Presidency was not negotiable and, therefore, called on the Igbo to begin to prepare themselves towards achieving the goal.

Boy Buries His 7 Years Old Younger Brother In Beach Sand While Playing



A seven-year-old boy has died after being buried alive by his younger brother as they played in a pile of sand at their rural home.
Wyatt McDaniel was pulled unconscious from the mound of sand after his five-year-old brother alerted their father.
Despite desperate efforts by Charlie McDaniel to revive his son with CPR and later by paramedics the boy went into cardiac arrest.
McDaniel was pronounced dead after being airlifted by helicopter from the family's horse farm in Bexar County, Texas.

Assassins kill 60-year-old woman, 2-year-old grandson in Ogun



Suspected assassins have murdered a 60-year-old woman, Amoke Musuru, and her 2-year-old grandson, in Ago-Oba area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
PREMIUM TIMES gathered that the suspected assassins at about midnight on Sunday broke into the one-room apartment of the woman in the storey building located within the Ajiko compound. The building is a family house that belongs to the victim’s husband’s extended family.
Gaining access into the room while the woman and her grandson were asleep, the suspects smashed the head of the duo with an iron rod, causing prompt death. The rod was left behind.

Man Plucks Out Wife’s Eye With Broomstick



A 28-year-old man has been brought before the court here for gouging out his wife’s eye with a broomstick during a domestic dispute while accusing her of infidelity.
The accused, Leonard Kadowonda, a Zimbabwean teacher was sentenced to 10 months’ imprisonment wholly suspended for five years after the complainant filed an affidavit to withdraw the case against him.
The court heard that on June 7 last year the complainant, Babra Samkange (21), was walking home from a nearby primary school in the company of her male friend when her husband spotted her. On arriving home, she was confronted by the husband.

6 killed, 25 injured as driver tries to avoid potholes



Bindawa (Katsina State) -  No fewer than six persons perished while 25 others were injured in a ghastly motor accident in Bindawa local government area of Katsina State on Sunday.
An eyewitness told a correpondent who visited the scene that the accident occurred at about 2 p.m. when a truck with registration number BRE 06 XN crashed along Bindawa-Charanchi road.
According to the eyewitness, the accident happened when the driver of the lorry carrying 40 passengers and 15 cows from Baure town to Charanchi market in Charanchi local government area of the state, lost control.

Prosecutor: Farouk Lawan’s Trial Starts This Week



After several months of delays, criminal charges will be filed against the former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Education, Farouk Lawan, the prosecutor, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), has informed THISDAY.
Lawan, who was also the Chairman of the House Ad Hoc Committee on the Monitoring of the Fuel Subsidy Scheme, had been accused by the Chairman of Zenon Oil and Gas Limited, Mr. Femi Otedola, of demanding and accepting a bribe of $620,000 to alter the report of the committee, in which Zenon had been indicted.

Daughter exposes father whose gang killed four policemen



A17-year-old girl identified simply as Simi has exposed the hiding place of her robber father to the officials of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, Lagos State Police Command.
Her father, Ife, was the alleged leader of a 10-man robbery gang that killed four policemen in Ajah during a robbery operation two weeks ago.
THE PUNCH had reported on January 15, 2012 that the dead policemen were responding to a distress call when they were ambushed by the robbers.
Simi did not give her father up easily. She gave the information the police needed to arrest her father after a four-hour non-stop interrogation.

Lagos State Assembly to regulate activities of fast food producers





Suuru Avoseh, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, says that the House will soon enact a law that would check the excesses of fast food producers.
Avoseh, who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Health Services, told said on Sunday in Lagos that most of the foods prepared by various restaurants were ``junk foods. ``And these junk foods are harmful to human health,’’ he stressed.

Almost half a billion naira was budgeted for the upgrade and rehabilitation of facilities at police colleges across the country in 2012,  investigations by SUNDAY PUNCH have shown.
A breakdown of the N307bn budget of police formations and commands, obtained from the Budget Office of the Federation, Ministry of Finance, showed that N296.75m was budgeted for the upgrade of facilities in the following police training institutions – Detective College, Enugu State, PMF training schools, Gwoza (Borno State) and Ila-Orangun (Osun), ATS Training School Nonwa-Tai, (Rivers) Police colleges, Ikeja (Lagos), Kaduna, Maiduguri (Borno), Oji-River (Enugu),  PTS Iperu (Ogun),  Ibadan (Oyo), Oyin-Akoko (Ondo), mounted and dog training schools, communication training schools, Ikeja and Kaduna.

Former Delta State University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ekoko, Kidnapped





Abedgnigo Ekoko, a former Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, was abducted this morning as he left a church service in Uzere, Isoko South Local Government Area.
It was gathered that Prof. Ekoko, who is the current chairman of the governing council of Delta State Polytechnic in Ogwashi-Uku, was snatched shortly after coming out of St. Paul Anglican Church.
Ogwashi-Uku, it would be recalled, was the scene of a recent similar drama when the mother of Coordinating Minister and Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was kidnapped in the royal palace. The police at that time claimed to have swept up all known kidnappers in the area.

Finally Kidnappers freed Lagos School Boy after N5m ransom settlement




Its quite disturbing to hear about the increased reported cases of kidnap across the country, and even more sad that the perpetrators of this heinous crime chose an innocent two-year old boy as their victim.
A two-year old boy was recently returned to his parents by kidnappers after his family paid N5 million ransom. According to PM News,  Emmanuel Alonge was kidnapped by yet to be identified gunmen on Monday at Iju area of Lagos State and was taken to an unknown destination.
The kidnappers had earlier demanded for N150 million, which they later slashed to N100 million and then to N20 million and later to N5 million.

Maku advises MEND not to make trouble over Okah’s Conviction



Abuja – The Minister of Information, Mr Lebaran Maku, said in Abuja on Sunday that it would be wrong for any group to foment trouble in Nigeria as a result of Henry Okah’s conviction in South Africa.  A South African court convicted Okah for his involvement in the Oct.1, 2010 bombings in Abuja.
After the court’s judgment, the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) threatened to attack South Africa and cause trouble in Nigeria.
Maku said it would be wrong for any group or individual to have anything against Nigeria as Henry Okah was tried and convicted in South Africa.

Presidency faults Ezekwesili on alleged misuse of $67b reserves





CITING misinformation, the Federal Government at the weekend debunked the allegation made by the former Vice-President World Bank, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, that the Presidents Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan administrations squandered the $67 billion reserves (including $45 billion in external and $22 billion in the excess crude account) left behind by the then President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Also, Ezekwesili has charged Nigerians not to be afraid to demand accountability and good governance. She said good governance increases service delivery and provides strong leadership, adding that governance was considered to be okay when it was free from corruption and accountable to the people.

Virginity Test: Ogun State Government, Police Disagree



Government and the police on Sunday disagreed over the delay in police investigation of the principal of Ajuwon Senior High School, Ajuwon, Rev. Olufunke Aladeojobi, who allegedly conducted virginity tests on pupils of the school.
 A senior police officer attached to the Ogun State Police Command, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told our correspondent on Sunday that the government had yet to hand over Aladeojobi to them.

R.I.P: Nigerian Hangs Himself In UK Over Fear of Deportation to Nigeria



Riliwanu Balogan was found hanged at Glen Parva Young Offender’s Institute in Leicester in 2011, a day after his 21st birthday.

The inquest heard he had told staff he had nothing to live for. The hearing coincided with the release of a report which said the centre had improved but there were still problems.

74 passengers escape air crash, after Abuja-bound plane develops fault 15 minutes after take-off

Terrible Sunday: At-least 245 killed In Brazilian NightClub Fire





Sao Paulo, Brazil 
-- A fire swept through a popular nightclub in southern Brazil early Sunday, killing at least 245 people, state media reported, citing police. 
The death toll was expected to climb as firefighters continued to pull bodies from the Kiss nightclub in Santa Maria, said Col. Adilomar Silva, the regional coordinator of civil defense.

Most of those killed appeared to have died of smoke inhalation, Silva said. Hundreds are believed to have been injured, though an exact count was not immediately available.  Many people were trampled in the panic to leave the club, one security guard tell us  The fire started "from out of nowhere" on a stage at the club and quickly spread to the ceiling, witness Jairo Vieira told Band News.

12 year old boy get 4 years jail for raping 11 year old girl



12 year old schoolboy is one of the youngest in the country to have ever been convicted of rape and get such a harsh punishment.  Two girls claimed that the boy raped them. One is an 11-year-old girl and the other girl is only 7-years-old. 
The boy was sentenced to four years in prison. He had to also register himself as a sex offender.

The court heard that the victims have been psychologically affected by the ordeals. The older girl tried to commit suicide and the seven-year-old girl has been having nightmares.   At the sentencing of the boy, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, Judge Mark Brown pointed out that he came from a broken home and his parents had a difficult relationship. 

Karen Igho Drops N50m Assault Case Against Smirnoff



In December 2012, Karen Igho was allegedly assaulted by a security guard stationed at the Smirnoff party in Lagos, who slapped her. Karen also claimed that she was pointed a gun at by the same security man who slapped her after allegedly demanding for money from her at the car park which she refused.   Soon after recounting her ordeal on twitter, the Big Brother Africa 2011 winner threatened to sue Smirnoff in the sum of N50million naira.  Just yesterday, Karen took to twitter to announce that she has dropped the assault charge against Smirnoff and has decided to settle the case out of court. Amnesty Programme To End In 2015 – Kuku



The Presidential Amnesty Programme for repentant militants in the Niger Delta which was initiated by the late President Umar usa Yar’Adua to restore peace in the region and guarantee uninterrupted crude oil supply, will soon come to and end as it is set to expire in 2015.
Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta who is also co-ordinator of the programme, Mr. Kingsley Kuku, disclosed that it would officially terminate in 2015. He, however, disclosed that some elements had been finding ways to abuse the programme, even when it had since been declared close in 2009.

Conviction of Henry Okah: Statement from Mend?



A statement purportedly from the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, has been released five days after its former leader Henry Okah was found guilty of the 2010 Independence day bombing by a South African court.
The statement, dated 23 January, and signed by “Comrade Azizi,” promises hell ahead in Nigeria. Thing is, no one knows for sure if the letter really came from MEND.

Woman Sues Dating Site After Brutal Attack



A Las Vegas woman is suing dating website Match.com after she was nearly killed by a man she met through the site. The woman suing Match.com apparently went on a few dates with a man she met through the site, until he began harassing her via text message.
That’s when things got ugly – Mary Kay Beckman showed up at home one night in January 2011, where Wade Ridley was waiting for her. Ridley stabbed her dozens of times in the face, in a brutal attack. Beckman survived, but Ridley struck again, killing a different woman he met through Match.com in Arizona.

Australian Scientists Finds Cure For AIDS



Scientists have discovered a breakthrough that could produce a potential cure for AIDS. Professionals from the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, Australia have reportedly found a way to modify the protein in HIV that protects against infection instead of replicate it, according to Associate Professor David Harrich.
“I consider that this is fighting fire with fire,” Harrich tells Australia’s ABC News. “What we’ve actually done is taken a normal virus protein that the virus needs to grow, and we’ve changed this protein, so that instead of assisting the virus, it actually impedes virus replication and does it quite strongly.”

Police Join Hunt For 10,000 Escaped Crocodiles



South Africa has called out the police to join the hunt for as many as 10,000 crocodiles on the loose after escaping from a farm during floods and being washed into one of southern Africa’s biggest rivers, officials said on Friday. According to reports during the week, a small farm in South Africa is dealing with the recovery of about 15,000 escaped crocodiles.
Officials in Pont Drift say the reptiles have since been spotted downstream when they got loose from the Rakwena farm and into the Limpopo River. “We will catch them as the farmers call us and say there are crocodiles. In Weipe there are many and I heard there were crocodiles in Musina on the school’s football field,” said Zane Langman, the son of Johan Boshoff, who owns the farm.

Boy Beaten To Death By His Father For Poor School Grades



A 12-year-old Emirati boy in Abu Dhabi has allegedly been beaten to death by his father, reports in the UAE has revealed. The father, who beat his son for receiving bad grades in the first trimester school examinations, is currently in police custody pending official charges next week.
Police officials told newsmen that the incident occurred towards the end of December, 2012. According to sources close to the family, the victim was enrolled in grade 8. Having underperformed in the school examinations, he had been afraid to show his grades to his family and had hidden them.

Security Guard Shoots Off Own Male Organ



You can’t say you’ve been in a more horrible position than this guy who will appear in court for carrying a gun that shot his manhood. A security guard at a hospital in Rio Claro, Trinidad and Tobago, accidentally shot his man-hood off with his .38-calibre handgun. A resident called police to report the sound of a gunshot coming from a parked car. When they arrived on the scene, police discovered the man bleeding from his groin with spent ammunition cartridges at his side. Adding insult to his injury is the fact that, according to police, the man didn’t have a license to carry the gun.

Man Pays Price For ‘Love At First Sight’; Gets Six Months Jail Term



A technician paid the price of ‘falling in love at first sight’ and was rewarded with six months behind bars for molesting a woman when she served him water. The 28-year-old Indian technician (name withheld) was accused of groping a Filipina housemaid and touching her indecently when he claimed to have fallen in love with her the first minute he saw her.The man was among a group of technicians who went to the villa of the Filipina’s sponsor to fix the cooling system.

10 More Corpses Found At Scenes Of Plateau Communal Clashes



Ten more corpses have been recovered from the scenes of the communal clashes between Fulani herdsmen and the natives in two villages of Wase Local Government Area. It was gathered that the killing in Foron Hecrisis was due to misinformation.
According to the source, armed robbers stopped some people who were returning from a local market called Wadatan Kasuwaadding. The hoodlums did not only rob the Fulanis but even the natives who were equally returning.

Tukur moves to tame PDP governors



The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has begun subtle moves to wrest the party from the grips of its governors and curb their overbearing influence.
To achieve his goal, Tukur plans to establish financial autonomy for the party, which will free it from over-dependence on the governors and the President.

Man Arrested Over Possession of Human Skulls and Ammunition



Security Operatives have arrested a Fulani leader in Mangu local government area of Plateau state, North Central Nigeria in the early hours of Friday with five human skulls hidden in the ceiling of his apartment while arms and ammunition were also recovered from the premises.
The combined team of police and military personnel carried out the raid following a tip off from some residents on the suspicious movement of the Fulani leader known as Ardo whose activities have been a concern to the community.

Drama At Election Petition Tribunal As Two Individuals Claim Party Chairmanship



It was drama of some sorts at the Ondo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on Tuesday when two persons each claimed to be the state chairman of Accord Party (AP). They were both subsequently walked out of the courtroom.
The development, however, made the Justice Andovar Kaka’an-led three-member team to reserve further action on the petition of the party until it was able to settle the chairmanship issue. Many things attract the attention of the Presidency daily. When such situations arise, meetings are held at the top echelon of the Federal Government by those whom the President has given the power to supervise such areas.
But when the President or his top handlers feel strongly that he must take personal charge of the situation, he attends such meetings and takes steps or makes pronouncements without delay.

Explosion Kills Four, Injures 20 In Ogun



No fewer than four persons were Friday feared dead, while 20 others sustained serious injuries in an explosion that rocked a factory in Ijako area of Sango-Ota, Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.
It was gathered that one of the boilers of a distilling company located along the Lagos – Abeokuta expressway caused the explosion which vibration led to the falling of  the perimeter fences of the neighbouring companies.
