₦33bn police pension Fraud: EFCC gets court order to seize suspects’ property



ABUJA—A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, yesterday, cleared the way for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to freeze the illicit property of two of the prime suspects in the looting of the Police Pension fund to the tune of about 33 billion. The two suspects to lose their property scattered in many locations in Lagos and Abuja, are Atiku Abubakar Kigo and Uzoma Cyril Attang, who are alleged to have used the stolen funds to acquire the assets.

US military attack would be considered threat to Syria’s national security - Syrian oppositioner Maher Merhej



One of the Syrian opposition leaders warned Washington that the American troops in the region would be attacked by squads of suicide bombers formed by the Syrian opposition in case Obama attacked Syria, Secretary General of the Syrian National Youth Party al-Chabaab, Maher Merhej, said in an exclusive interview with the Voice of Russia.

"Motherland is more important than opposing the government", said Maher Merhej, secretary-general of the Syrian opposition party Al Chabaab in his interview to the Fars News Agency (FNA) on August 31.

The authorities of the Nigerian Army have retired some top generals of the Army. It was gathered that those retired were ten in number. Among those affected were the former Director of Training and Operations, Defence Headquarters, Maj.-Gen. Lawrence Ngugbane, the former Commander of Training, Doctrine and Command, Maj.-Gen. Babagana  Mungonu, and the former Chief of Research and Development, Maj.-Gen. Obinali Ariahu.

6.9 quake hits Japan




A strong earthquake struck wide areas of north-eastern and eastern Japan on Wednesday, the Meteorological Agency said. No tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The agency said the magnitude-6.9 quake struck at 9:19 am (GMT 0019), and was centred off Torishima, 600 kilometres south of Tokyo, at a depth of 400 kilometres. Tokyo Electric Power Co said there were no abnormalities at its damaged Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

Russia’s anti-missile radars register two ballistic launches in Mediterranean – Defense Ministry



Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has reported to President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday that the country's missile detection system had registered two launches of ballistic missiles in the Mediterranean region. The missiles have been fired from the Sea's eastern coastline. The launches took place at 10:16 am Moscow time (06:16 GMT) and were detected by the early warning system in Armavir in southern Russia, the defence ministry said in a statement quoted by Russian news agencies. The event comes amid growing expectations of Western military action in Syria. Syria’s embassy in Moscow said it had no information on the nature of the ballistic launches.

THE Rivers State Police Command, on Monday, declared Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s Aide De Camp, Seimeikumo Debewari, a deserter. The state police command said Debewari had seized to be the ADC to Amaechi since his disappearance and refusal to obey directives from the force.
Debewari, who is an Assistant Superintendent of Police, was said to be involved in the free-for-all that took place in the State House of Assembly on July 10, 2013.

Navy arrests two Beninoise, three others over pipeline vandalism



LAGOS — Two Benin Republic nationals and three others have been arrested by operatives of Beecroft of the Nigerian Navy over alleged vandalism in Lagos. They were alleged to have vandalised pipeline in Makoko area of the state. Recovered from the suspects were 270 jerricans filled with siphoned petroleum products. The Benin Republic nationals, however, told Vanguard that they were fishermen, who fished in Nigeria’s waters in company of some Nigerians.

US National Security Agency spied on the communications of the Brazilian and Mexican presidents, accessing the Mexico leader's emails even before he was elected, Brazil's Globo television reported.

Glenn Greenwald, a Rio de Janeiro-based columnist for the Guardian newspaper who obtained secret files from NSA leaker Edward Snowden, told Globo on Sunday that a document dated June 2012 shows that Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto's emails were being accessed already a month before his election.

Obama to meet McCain to obtain his support for intervention in Syria



US President Barack Obama is expected to invite Senator John McCain to the White House today to help sell to Congress the idea of a US military intervention in Syria. Members of Congress in both parties said they would not be able to support the current draft of a resolution authorizing Obama to launch a military strike. John Kerry, the US secretary of state, and Chuck Hagel, the secretary of defense, will both appear before Congress to make the administration's case for war on Tuesday.
Part of their drive includes winning over John McCain, who has called for the US to intervene forcefully to overthrow Bashar al-Assad and said he would oppose "isolated military strikes that are not part of an overall strategy" to defeat the regime.

(Presidents) Obama and Hollande have been incapable of doing so," Assad told the French daily in an interview.
"Anybody who contributes to the financial and military reinforcement of terrorists is the enemy of the Syrian people. If the policies of the French state are hostile to the Syrian people, the state will be their enemy," he said. "There will be repercussions, negative ones obviously, on French interests."

 President Goodluck Jonathan met Sunday at the Presidential Villa with the President Boni Yayi of neighbouring Benin Republic. Both leaders attended Sunday service together at the Villa Chapel before proceeding to the presidential residence for lunch and bilateral talks.
 
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo worshipped with President Jonathan and President Yayi at the Presidential Villa but didn't take part in the talks between them.

Terrible: Pastor rapes woman in church during ‘spiritual bath’




ABEOKUTA — A 46-year-old Pastor, Olamide Sobowale, of Glory Church of Christ Aladura, Oke-Itoku, Abeokuta, Ogun State,  has been ordered to be remanded in prison for allegedly raping a woman while bathing in his church backyard.

Pastor Sobowale, who  was arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, yesterday, was accused of  raping one Dupe Makinde, 30, who lives in Isaje, Abeokuta, while taking a spiritual bath  allegedly  recommended by the pastor.

British secret agency, M16, police behind £3,000 visa bond against Nigeria – REPORT -




A report from a United Kingdom based journal, University World News, has said the £3,000 visa pilot scheme against Nigeria was proposed by the British intelligence service, MI6 and British police headquarters at Scotland Yard.

The new UK visa scheme will impose £3,000 (US$4,740) in charges on unspecified visa applicants thought to be ‘high risk visitors’ from Nigeria, Ghana, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan.
The Nigerian government has threatened retaliatory measures if London goes ahead with the ‘refundable’ but unpopular visa bond.

Black Jesus dies



An infamous cult leader known as “Black Jesus”, who was suspected of cannibalism, has been chopped to death in a remote Papua New Guinea village, reports said Friday.


According to AFP, Steven Tari, a convicted rápist, had been on the run since escaping from a prison in Madang in the Pacific nation’s east during a mass break-out with 48 others in March.

Bizarre : Woman commits suicide in Ondo after her partner refused to get her an Iphone



Ok today is officially a strange news day....
A 41-year-old woman, Mrs Catherine Sefunmi Urouna, on Saturday, committed suicide by drinking substance suspected to be chemical in protest of her husband's refusal to get her a ipad device. The household of five were thrown into mourning, whilst the neighbours were shocked that a woman who had been happily married might take this type of nasty decision to take her very own life over an ipad. The authorities in Ondo State are, however, investigating the specific reason for her death.

EFCC Wants Stephaine Okereke, Others Arrested Over Akpabio's 50m Largesse!!



The Nigerian movie industry otherwise known as Nollywood is poised for a showdown as the Association of Nollywood Core Producers,ANCOP, has petitioned EFCC and SFU over the N50 million largesse donated by Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State to support the industry.

 
The association is alleging massive fraud in the disbursement of the fund. It has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) to investigate the matter.

President Olusegun Obasanjo is said to have returned to the trenches within the fold of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) following the outcome of the governorship primaries of the party in Anambra State.

Heartless: Woman kills Husband and cooks Body




woman in eastern China murdered her husband and boiled the corpse to cover her tracks after he abused her and her daughter, a report said Saturday. The woman drugged the man, her second husband, and tortured him for three days in June by withholding food and water and beating him, causing his death, said a report on government-backed news portal Anhui News.
She then dismembered the corpse with a saw and boiled the parts in a pressure cooker to hide the evidence, the report said. It did not detail how she disposed of the cooked flesh afterwards. The psychological burden of the crime proved too much for her to bear, causing her to lose 14 pounds (6.3 kilograms) and turn herself into police, according to the report.  A police officer in Anhui province’s Lu’an City, where the incident occurred, confirmed the case to AFP but declined to give further details.

US marine ships join Navy destroyers in Mediterranean for possible Syria attack



The USS San Antonio, an amphibious assault ship carrying about 300 Marines, has joined five Navy destroyers in the Eastern Mediterranean for a possible US strike against the Syrian government.

The San Antonio has not received specific tasking, but it is being kept in the area as a “prudent decision should ship capabilities be required” during a Syria contingency, a defense official said.

Obama seeks Congressional approval to bombard Syrian Government



US President Barack Obama does not need congressional approval to order strikes against Syria, but that option is disadvantageous to him, Chairman of the Russian State Duma International Affairs Committee Alexei Pushkov told Interfax.

“The law obliges the president to seek congressional authorization in case of war, but in a whole number of cases in the past the law was ignored on the basis of Congress’s resolution 1973 which authorizes the president to launch a military operation overseas for up to 60 days under emergency circumstances without seeking permission from Congress if immediate action is necessary,” Pushkov said

Britain to provide US with intelligence to support Syria strikes despite the British parliament’s rejection
