Former European footballer of the year, Ruud Gullit, has advised the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) to concentrate its energy at making refereeing friendly to teams.

The AC Milan’s former play maker said some questionable calls by referees at the on going Africa Cup of Nations could ruin all the gains as fans might begin to doubt the authenticity of champions when they emerge at the end of the tournament.

A Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos yesterday ruled that Rev King, the General Overseer of the Christian Praying Assembly who was arrested and sentenced to death six years ago for murder, must die by hanging.

Reverend Chukwuemeka Ezeuko aka Rev King was arrested, prosecuted and sentenced to death by hanging in January 2007 for the death of one of his church members, a young girl named Ann Uzoh, who he set ablaze by pouring fuel on her along with 6 other church members after accusing them of committing fornication in his church. Ann died in hospital from injuries she sustained from the burn. Rev King has been in prison since then awaiting his death sentence, which he appealed and lost.

MEND Threat: Jomo Gbomo says Nigerians should disregard it

Another faction of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) led by Jomo Gbomo released a statement yesterday asking Nigerians to disregard the recent threat by a  self-acclaimed leader of the group, Comrade Azizi, to unleash  mayhem in Nigeria following the jailing of Henry Okah by a South African court for terrorism.

President Goodluck Jonathan has been descried as a war-time president who is facing security challenges as a result of the “ineptitude and tardiness” of his predecessors. The Special Adviser to the President on the Niger Delta, Kingsley Kuku, said this at a media briefing, in Lagos on Saturday.

Kuku lamented the inability of Nigerians to fully grasp the enormous challenges inherited by the present administration and the efforts made at addressing them.

UK, Nigeria should unite on human trafficking – IPPR report

Steps should be taken to strengthen the United Kingdom-Nigeria war against trafficking, a 2013 report by the Institute of Public Policy Research has recommended. It suggested that one of the ways this could be achieved is by increasing the tariffs for trafficking in Nigeria. This, it said, would serve as a disincentive to traffickers and their cohorts. 

Titled, “Beyond borders, human trafficking from Nigeria to the UK,” the report also called on the Nigerian government agencies such as the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons, to formalise their working agreement with and support the anti-trafficking work done by many people in Nigeria.

The Nigeria Democratic Liberty Forum (NDLF) has described as a “disgrace” the conduct of government officials in failing to distinguish between official duties and private events.

In a statement issued today, the group said it was appalled by the crass display of impunity by the Goodluck Jonathan administration in the deployment of federal government's military assets for private and social events to the extent that military equipment has become a perk of office.

“The prior use of similar chopper by President Goodluck Jonathan during the burial of his brother in Otueke and the use of a Naval chopper by Presidential aide-Mr Oronto Douglas for his father's burial which resulted in the loss of the Nigerian Navy helicopter is reprehensible,” NDLF said.
